Antigua, the island of 365 beaches offers you this distinctive hotel, somewhere that will allow you to visit tourist sites and beaches, discover the local culture and make the most of the culinary surprises its chef has in store for you. The tone once set, there was still one problem left:
Why would an umpteenth All-Inclusive hotel be created on the beach when there are already so many beaches to be visited and so many things to explore?
A new concept, quite innovative, slowly took shape. It seemed natural to offer guests the possibility to unwind in a superb luxury property, warm and animated, whilst giving them all the necessary services to facilitate their activities around the island together with access to numerous beaches and restaurants – all this while being followed closely by an attentive staff ready to cater to all their needs.
Here is what we experienced during our stay in Antigua:
From the top of the hills overlooking the eastern coast of Antigua and the beautiful bay of Jolly Harbor, stands the famous Sugar Ridge, the hotel that has given us a perfect welcome and that we have appreciated so much.
In groups of four, these gorgeous rooms are scattered around the hills and orientated towards the sea for a perfect sense of intimacy. The different room options vary according to the floor:
On the first floor, you will find a large veranda with sofa and other daringly chic outdoor furniture – Sugar Ridge being a boutique hotel – while the floor below hides a little private swimming pool for four people.
We discovered our room, located on the top floor, and which didn’t have a pool; however ice-cold champagne and two flutes were waiting for us. Hibiscus flowers were sprinkled all over the bed and the bathroom; the decoration is both modern and warm.
Discovering the Hotel and its beach additions
We have an Aveda Concept Spa to our disposal offering manicure, pedicure, hairdressing, massage-room for two, Yoga and Pilates area; the SPA products have even found their way to our bedrooms: shampoo, conditioner, moisturizing cream, etc…
The hotel offers fitness classes on the beach every Saturday.
There are also different shops and two restaurants – an extremely trendy piano-bar and a favorite on the island, the Sugar Club, while the other is reserved mainly for romantic and chic dinners with its à-la-carte menu, Carmichael’s.
Here we are told that there will be a one-off a little treat waiting for us at dinnertime. It is the Chef’s ‘tasting menu’ which implies that we will get to try each and every single one of the dishes that figure on the menu. For someone as extremely greedy as me, this is no more than a dream which gets even better as the Chef, who came to greet us, has cooked up refined dishes, a tasty and modern cuisine: Watermelon Carpaccio tossed with feta and pine nuts, half-cooked tuna, asparagus and rocket salad along with shavings of grilled bacon…Trou Normand… and a chocolate and orange fondant as well as a passion fruit sorbet representing an eruption of the Montserrat Volcano for dessert… it is not an easy task to linger at length on every detail but it can only be said that the meal was simply magical!
The next day, we were brought to discover the rural surroundings in our little shuttle-bus before being left to Vorn “The Natural Walk guy”, a warm and friendly Rasta, with a big smile and a great sense of humor, who took us to explore the nearby beaches in his open-top Tropical 4X4.
Vorn has an unquestionable talent that he himself cannot explain: he feels our desires. Here we are in his “Vornmobile”, along with another couple and a single lady. Vorn stops in different places and proposes to each one of us ‘his/her’ beach: a remote place for the couple who will spend their time lazing in the sun far from the rest of the world, but near enough to a little restaurant nested in an idyllic setting, the single woman finds herself on a more animated beach, with lots of restaurants and even more chances of meeting someone while we were driven to a more rustic beach, less touristic but with what we were eagerly looking for: Jet Skis to explore the coast.
Relevant Information: Sugar Ridge has an agreement with about 3 beach restaurants: go anywhere there with your All-Inclusive blue bracelet and everything is free!
All in all, we received an incredible welcome in this exceptional place in all its luxury and friendliness but at an affordable price! I would then strongly recommend that you visit their website before jumping on the next plane and heading there for an unforgettable holiday.
